A Child’s Strength

by mkvecchitto

A cruel twist in a broken world took a father from his children

A boy and a girl, still adrift in teen-aged years,

display courage most adults have yet to find

While lovely logic tries to make sense of the senseless

they find grace to simply accept

My heart is heavy as I join the congregation

in songs meant to strengthen faith

Voices strangled in grief use stolen breaths

in hymns meant to heal

It is their sweet response that transcends our sorrow

Heads held high, they walk alone

to lead the funeral procession

Wringing hands the only sign divulging

storms of emotion raging in ones too young

As a father’s enduring love fortifies each step

  1. Extraordinarily moving as if by one herself touched by ‘a twist in a broken world’ . . . Your poetry is a gift!

  2. A friend of mine recently lost her husband, and her three teenage children stood there, much like your poem, and bravely said goodbye… lovely piece
