A National Bugs Bunny Day Limerick

by Joel Kravitz

Bugs Bunny Day

National Bugs Bunny Day on April 30th commemorates the date the famous bunny first appeared in a short film in 1938. The picture is the tie that I wear when I do stand up. Yes, The Limerick Guy has given stand up a try…on and off for thirty years and that’s how long I have had the tie.

Here is my limerick tribute to the very wonderful cartoon character who entertained Baby Boomers when we were growing up. Every Saturday movie matinee started off with a medley of Warner Brothers Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons, most of which featured the Oscar winning rabbit and a cast of kookie characters – Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam and many more.  Bugs won an Academy Award for Best Cartoon Short Subject in 1958 becoming the first and only Bugs Bunny cartoon to win said award.

Bugs was the best at “maroon” ridicule
And his foils all played the perfect fool.
With his beguiling smile
And his inimitable style…
Bugs Bunny was the epitome of cool!
