Reposting a poem from 2015 for #Throwback Friday

in the early morning
when I rise
A chance to refresh

And in the early morning, I wait
Tendrils of light sweetly coax promises
from darkened skies
I watch shadows transform
Glittering dust dances in the corners of my mind
I am humbled by possibilities

A time for ending
A time for beginning
Beginning to make plans
Beginning to make a move
Move to find warmth in Winter’s wisp
Move to find meaning down where the stars sleep

Hope lives here
in these remembered days
beneath the sky, ever blue
Borne of seconds

some thought it sad
her swiftly failing memory
from this side of dreams
it looked dreary and dark
like rain on a cold November night
caught between the grim and the futile
she was a frail woman
lingering on the edge of golden gates
window-shopping before making a final purchase
living in the space between breaths
against the odds, as if efforts to contradict were futile
inexplicable, strength simmering in an old soul

I am the willow
stooped and ungainly
from years of solitude and discordant thoughts
They weave together to carve lines in my flesh
but my roots run deep as I seek sweet water
It’s a reckless love, this unquenchable thirst

easy
effortless
If it’s meant to be
we’ll navigate this storm
knots will soften and release

It’s been a minute or a hundred years
Life has gone on and this old world has turned
The scent of your cologne, I feel you near
I am a child once again, unconcerned

the woods waited for her every day
she passed the ancient sickly trees
she felt the wind still with their bated breath
she heard whispers in that wind, hollow
silence screaming desperate pleas

And ashes to ashes as we go
burning it to the ground
in this, a parallel world
where our wishes drape the sky,
twinkling for but a moment before they fall
crashing to the earth below

Truth always speaks to choices made
Whispers of that inner voice weighed
Ghosts play in the morning light
collecting years just out of sight
Oh, the price we paid, price we paid

Never did I look back at the fallout
All the unravelings and beginnings
and whispered stories were
fodder for adventure

She endures
She defines
Defines the beginning and the end
Defines life after life
Life captured between the glory of fire and water
Life gifted with infinite wishes
Wishes meant to be serene
Wishes to serve as reminders

a welcome pursuit as she chases fate
The crowd gathers in silence, a ceremonial arrival
as she eases into dirty water

If I could see my way clear of endless shadows
if I could silence these echoes of yesterday
if I could embrace up and coming challenges
and summon strength that is never too near
if I could, I’d imagine the riches I’d find

There’s humility in the rain that visits in the whispering shallows
Here where the world is quiet and still, I listen
I draw comfort from the steady drone that sounds like a heartbeat,
here where drops of water weigh heavy on fragile petals

I’ve lost my place
caught out here on purgatory road
I’m stuck in reverse
in this tunnel with no end
in this tunnel with no beginning
The beginning
before everything was
dismantled and disguised
Should have known
when you called me
by her name

We almost discarded it, the rickety dresser that couldn’t quite find its center
It was covered in a fine layer of dust, the grime a testament to years of neglect
Each drawer was more stuck than the last as if it knew salvation was out of reach,
as if it understood there were better offerings, shiny and new, out there in the world somewhere

And when magic is lean and your mantra seems tarnished and messy,
when courage is desperate for a way to escape and dreams are filled with regret,
when being headstrong and proud leaves you sort of wishing for reasons
to abdicate your throne, whatever that may be, remember…

wind-driven waves crash against the shore
shooting salt spray high above jagged rocks
gulls cry and seem to tumble from angry skies
they swoop into the swirling surf to snatch silvery fish
I watch them, not yet dead as they wriggle in the bird’s claws
a sight that fills me with dread

I awoke to a breaking memory
caught somewhere between
layers of haze and impending storms
I tried to hold it, to capture the edges
before they dissolved back into nothingness
My mind bent and curved as if it were a porcelain cup
