The Power of Words – a series of haiku

by Swann Lavender

She asked her mother,
“Am I pretty?” The answer —
“It doesn’t matter.”

She took that as a
“No.” Fragile confidence hurled
crashing to the floor.

With time, she gathered
the shards of glass. Hands bleeding,
she looked for comfort.

Pretty out of reach,
she turned to the words Healthy,
Peaceful, and Alive.

She kept searching for
the pearl within the pain and
at last she found it.

Words that contained life —
“Don’t settle for anything
less than Beautiful.”
