There's a sunset coming though a ways off yet
I can see the glow to the West
as the evening time approaches now
a bid at my behest
It's yellow, pink and pastel
and full of warming glow
foretelling of a different time
that all too soon I'll know
High on Ditchling Beacon
the warmth of sunshine glow
hid the fact of bitter cold
with Sussex Weald below
But sheltered in the lea this bank
gave us some respite there
as we took in the setting sun
this special time to share
And as the evening gathered
and the gold slipped slow away
the glow outside so too within
confirmed this lovely day
Through the trees of an evening
the delight of the gold
as the sunset descends once again
and this moment divine
which is wholly mine
is comforting like an old friend
Westminster sunset
the gold in the sky
makes for a wonder
as I hurry by
But just enough time
to capture the scene
on my iPhone a snapshot
my thumb on the screen
for something to look at
a memory to keep
as I head on homeward
at the end of the week
Gold on water evening time
on the beach into sublime
Westward walking all this mine
In Sussex by the sea
Sea air salty winter clime
far out there horizon line
evening shadows intertwine
In Sussex by the sea
All these wonders help define
the sea in me this storyline
of beaches with the weather fine
In Sussex by the sea
Caught a sunset to die for on the beach in the gold
just there in time in the afternoon cold
and down on the shoreline where the waves meet the sand
just down from the shingle took in this view grand
And breathing in deep the fresh salty air
I knew perfect the privilege I had to be there
For this was a moment to seize for the day
and know a contentment in every way
Sunset in full symmetry
over Shoreham yesterday
as we drive back down from Lewes
heading homeward on our way
Golden beams across the sea
from sunshine in the cloud
made for a special moment
and announcement there aloud
It was grey, then it wasn't
when the day ended gold
and the rain clouds went eastward
to the Kent coast and cold
And Sussex saw sunshine
at the end of the day
with a sunset to die for
in a golden array
Sunglare shine on longshore drift
the rippled sand aglow
down here in early evening
as the sunshine sinks down low
Cool the lapping wavelets
from the brilliance of day
as barefoot here I wander
whilst around me seagulls play
As the sun sank low
down there in the west
its day labours done
and time for a rest
a lone duck swam by
on the lake bathed in gold
silhouetted right there
that circumstance sold
And I breathed deep a sigh
at magnificence here
idyllic and magical
tinged with a tear
that trickled with joy
down a cheek as I stood
and took all this in
and knew it was good
And in this patch of England
idyllic by the lake
a little slice of heaven
on this evening we will make
Sunshine setting, shadows long
with stillness to the air
we stand and simply marvel
whilst a nightingale sings there
The golden of the evening
is a lovely thing to see
glistening on forsythia
and shining off its leaves
Particularly through the strands
of our new sunscreen door
colourful it gently sways
which is what we bought it for
And there is birdsong out there
as the sunset it arrives
a joyful song to end the day
and the pleasure it derives
The pastel pink of evening
was in the sky tonight
as I sat writing poems
and caught the lovely sight
So with my i-phone there I captured it
before it went away
attesting to the passing
of another lovely day
It’s a quarter to six
and the sun’s sinking low
But it’s so lovely here
that I don’t want to go
So I’ll sit here a while
as the shadows grow long
to watch the sun set
to the ebbing tide’s song
Long shadows with October
the days dawn cold and bright
and the sunshine in the eastern sky
provides a gorgeous sight
Glinting on the water
and magnificently gold
Rising over Shoreham beach
to the river in the cold
Leigh-on-Sea here in Essex
At the end of the day
The sun setting low in the West
Sitting with friends
On which one depends
This time of day is the best
