Marylebone

by Jem Croucher

Sat outside in Marylebone
the summer evening warm
I think we’re getting used to this
as if it were the norm
Perhaps it is as it’s been weeks
since we saw any rain
and several months have passed us by
since summer time it came

Slow Season

by Jem Croucher

There are paddle boards and kayaks
Inflatables and yachts
And barking dogs just running
and calling all the shots
There are diamonds on the water
glistening in the sun
with the sound of wavelets breaking
on the shore by everyone

Ever Present

by Jem Croucher

The sun has shone for several weeks
and England’s seen no raining
But I’ve been on the beach most days
so you’ll not hear me complaining

A child of summer, this for me
is perfect beyond measure
Blue skies every day and warmth
revealing summers’ treasure

That lavender time again III

by Jem Croucher

No.3 in the annual Jemverse ‘Lavender’ series

On twenty-three seven
it seems every year
a lavender rhyme
will often appear
For it is at this time
that my harvest is due
so I’ll always have words
to share here with you

Fields of Lavender

by Jem Croucher

We walked in fields of lavender
on the sixth day of July
On a summer evening
beneath a clear blue sky
Lordington near Chichester
high on Sussex hills
to watch the setting of the sun
A cure to cure all ills

What the summer’s for

by Jem Croucher

There’s a lone kite surfer
out on the seas
dancing on waves
in an easterly breeze
The tide’s on the turn
and is going out now
but the sun is still strong
and warm on my brow

Horse in the water

by Jem Croucher

Horse on the beach
with his hooves in the water
Well, why not, I thought
in this weather he oughta
‘Cos if people can paddle
then why not a horse
No reason to think of
and just right of course

Fortunate Fellow

by Jem Croucher

There’s a little dog barking
just in the sea
the gentle waves lapping
as he runs around free
People are paddling
and all having fun
Enjoying the warmth
of the full evening sun

Little boat bobbing

by Jem Croucher

There’s a little boat bobbing
on the waves just out there
Alone in the water
its white hull a-glare
Catching the sun as
it catches the sea
Glinting like diamonds
quite brilliantly

Summer Wars

by Renwick Berchild

The dust of Summer,
rubber, barbecue and
mT air that I beg might bring the rains, Neruda’s
gold ghost, Las Manos del Dia under an umbrella say
do I comprehend, how much it may mean
to meet a grizzled old tree
hale and green
after the many deaths
of teething Winter,
hollow poems
no justice
they cannot say,
Longfellow is out walking
my cautious light around the park.

Twelve Months Six

by Jem Croucher

No 11 of 12 in the Jemverse ’12 months’ series

Thursday’s child has far to go’
Something I had always known

Born of summer, summer’s child
Often wayward, always wild

My birth month June, the first today
Brings me out to dance and play

Summer Days

around the wide bay
of the coastline in Sussex
bathed in a blue
reflecting the sky
is a joy to eschew

Clear Day

by Renwick Berchild

Blankets are leaving, we are all naked
as newborns, with sunglasses on our eyes.
The bluegreen day with yellow tint
is disguised as grey,
and we can’t blink
until the park is met, until our feet get wet;
it’s a savanna, and the rhododendrons
flare, and my compass knows
the way, the tide will take me out
come noon.

Colour Jumble

as a potter with clay

the warmth that it brought
give us the summer
that we had long sought

Sunshine followed sunshine

Sunshine followed sunshine
May had listened well
Another day of yellow
the echo there could tell

this year but in replacement
Summer’s here and early
to fill us with amazement

Return of a friend

by Jem Croucher

And in the clouds I saw yellow
knew it was the sun
and from the warmth that I felt
knew that summer had come
And from the scent in the air
of freshly mown grass
knew my friend had returned
to stay at long last

Going Blind In The Sunshine

by Renwick Berchild

Watch my eyes, they dip and dive, my hand over my mouth,
my chin in my shoulder, away like the cold – it’s spring. Let’s go.
The trees are shaking off their bitter time spent contemplating their
poesy to sing. Now, they begin the music, green notes illumed
lightbulbs, they’re on. Let’s head outside into the ramose sunshine.

A ray of sun captured (and revisited)

by Jem Croucher

2 of 7 in the Jemverse ‘Beach Huts’ series

I captured the sunset
at the beach hut today
Late in the evening
with a golden display

Reflective and gorgeous
the warmth of the sun
captured right here
as the day is all done

You can never have too much yellow (revisited)

by Jem Croucher

6 of 6 in the Jemverse ‘Yellow’ series

You can never have too much yellow
for it’s the colour of the sun
And I’d challenge you to disagree
it’s not loved by everyone

For me that’s going to be the case
for as long as I can see
For it’s synonymous with summer
Where I so love to be
