These hills, these ways, these wildflower trails
so many times traversed
and yet in absence, no regret

my heartstrings pulled to smile
whenever I'm on Sussex trails
for mile on wondrous mile

and I was on leave
and the hills were all green
and the chalk of the trail
is the best I have seen
so I put best foot forward
with this walk 'cos it's there
reacquainting myself

In August there’s ochre
as the harvest grows ripe

Went for a walk up on Mill Hill
and met some scary sheep
But although we had due warning

5 of 5 in the Jemverse ’31’ series

We lost sight of our accordion player
as we wandered, singing our song
But he was just lagging behind us
as we slowly ambled along

Fulking Village just ahead there to find
We turned and up there high above us

A day long awaited
arrives and I’m ready
Gear is all packed
and weather looks steady
Dry bags for the rain
if it comes just in case
But I’m hoping that they
will remain in their place

Eight miles took us past the Ring
where the view as ever was
breathtaking in the sunshine
on the South Downs here because
(and I know that some will argue)
but this is heaven here on earth
A place that God has smiled upon
and with riches given worth

Up on the Downs
with sunshine and sheep
and lambs newly born
and hills always steep
and cows in the distance
and haze on the hill
and a marvellous view
that surprises me still

Up on the ridge of the South Downs in Sussex
the view is especially fine
And the good thing for us is that it’s really quite close
So we’re up there time after time
