I can tell it is winter
as it’s dark when I leave
and dark when I’m on my way home
As I’m all of a quiver
with a shake and a shiver
from the cold that brings chill to the bone
It’s not a season
I will freely admit
I’d encourage or even condone
Yet there’s reason to sing
as it’s followed by Spring
so I’ve really no reason to moan

I was not mistaken
The light it was there
As the brightness envelops
me here in its glare
That promise of hope
which each new year brings
Echos crescendo
as unison sings

With one foot in yellow
the other in white
My pace takes me forward
with promise in sight
At present the mist
O’er floodplains obscures
But behind it the light
like a bright beacon lures

Galanthus greets this New Year’s day
Snowdrop heads due reverence show
and as a new sun rises
sleep heads all come to know
That here is opportunity
A promise waiting in the wings
heralding the new, a first
Tugging at those old heartstrings

I have confidence that
now the year end is here
That twenty eighteen
will end with good cheer
For it’s swiftly flown past
and been full to the brim
with all of the memories
contained here within

A little yellow
as a splash against the green
Memory of warmth
This yellow fills me
Drives away my winter blues
Hums a cheerful song
And I am yellow
Reflecting the sunshine here
I shine to the day

Eight line stanza thinking of
the winter with me now
Brittle chill, not warming sun
cold upon my brow
But dressed up warm its good to brace
the iron winter chill
for as it passes Springtime looms
and ever closer still

There’s yellow in the garden
a little summer still
despite the fact it’s winter
and we have November chill
So I’ll hold this to my heart
for its promise is right there
Reminding me that summer
will be mine again to share

to April’s last day
with rain and strong winds
to greet first of May
Yet there is still time
for the sunshine to come
with promise of summer
born of the sun

Walked home under rainbows
in a leaden sky
Gave me pause to wonder
as I hurried by
The hope left in that promise
all those years ago
With rain and shine a beauty
ever there on show

All hail to lighter evenings
with British Summer Time
A promise waiting in the wings
of warmer things in line
And walking home this evening
the birdsong in the air
proved to me they thought the same
and shared that promise there
