Waves throw up on the shore
remnants of ocean lives
tangles of plastic
debris from both sides
of a blurring boundary.
Revealing hints of the diversity underneath
and of the death we impose.

No 11 of 12 in the Jemverse series ‘Back to the sea’
With every breaking wave
I see a part of me
My life down here in Sussex
In Shoreham by the sea
So taciturn, its nuances
Reflect the changing years
An echo to my lost and loved
My joy, my smiles, my tears

No 8 of 12 in the Jemverse series ‘Back to the sea’
Think I’ll go sit in the sea
Let the waves wash over me
One of the best places to be
When I am feeling like this
Think I’ll go play in the sand
Build something with my own hand
A castle that’s splendid and grand
Where I will then live in bliss

No 7 of 12 in the Jemverse series ‘Back to the sea’
Hidden in your moving green and grey
I see your missing smile
But, braced against the salt-sting blast,
Calm will return a while
You change. but with eyes closed
That sweet, familiar taste
Reminds me of sultry summer days
Beneath this winter waste
Loosing myself in your expression, I see change
But it matters not to me
Fickle it may be, yet your promise there
Reminds me of what you are, the sea

No 6 of 12 in the Jemverse series ‘Back to the sea’
I watched the sea, it did me proud
I smiled at it and laughed out loud
The waves they roared, I roared right back
As I wasn’t having any of that
Alone on the stone with sun and spray
On a fine and perfect Springtime day
On the shoreline with the crashing sounds
That filled the air and shook the ground

No 5 of 12 in the Jemverse series ‘Back to the sea’
There are tiny white horses out there
Scampering daintily over the hills
That form as the wavelets tumble
Rolling over a sandscape
Glistening in the evening sun
And the wind seems to have dropped
I can taste the salt and feel
the warmth of a setting sun

Steel grey seas with iron chill
it’s with whimsy that I peer
at the beach I know so well
in summer brings such cheer
Yet now the winter’s icy hand
has me firmly in its grip
As grey green waters frenzied churn
with northern winds are whipped

If I do nothing else today
the one thing I will do
Is sit down on the beach a while
and watch the lovely view
For I will never tire of this
The sea, the sky, the sun
Particularly when like now
My working day is done

A ship is out there sailing
I can’t see it but it’s there
Out upon the ocean waves
of me, it’s unaware
And yet a synergy akin
we share both it and I
Affinity with ocean wide
as both go passing by

I’ve sat by the sea in Croatia
I’ve set by the sea in Spain
I’ve sat by the sea in Turkey and Greece
but it’s never quite been the same
I’ve sat by the sea in Gibraltar
I’ve sat by the sea in France
I’ve sat by the sea in Montenegro and Crete
but it’s always like taking a chance

Sailed every ocean
over several years
They’ve given me joy
and also some tears
Yet great as they are
I will always defer
to the sea here in Sussex
the one I prefer

Sailed several oceans
then came home for a rest
as the ocean of home
is always the best
For it’s here that my heart
with the sea that I know
will always stay true
wherever I go

This moment twists in on itself
A cruel freak show contortionist
Who stares agape, tear-carved
Deltas from his made up eyes.
If only it would twist into a pretzel
With lots of salt
That we’d eat with mustard.
Two kids on a boardwalk,

I have lost count the number
of poems I have written
about the sea in Sussex
as really, I am smitten
So, if I only wrote of water
would you think less of me?
for really, if the truth be told
it’s best beside the sea
I can sit here hour on hour
beside the soothing waves
and gaze out at its fathoms
on sultry summer days
For me it’s inspiration
of it I’ll never tire
It prompts my words and writing
and builds in me a fire

A blueberry scarf
is the ring of her neck, a promise
to remain warm when clutched by the chills of love – it’s enough.
Enough to block the ravaging eyes, keep her head
snug and rooted on her shoulders,
keep her mouth speaking foreign languages
and her ears keen.

So are the seas, bright even in this darkness,
Bright like eyes, who’ve not succumb to death,
With lights still inside, peering from the soul;
This is the ocean, and I linger by her, a ghost.

3 of 3 in the Jemverse ‘Ocean’ trilogy

It’s the ocean of everything
I know and hold dear
And I’m part of its essence
That much remains clear
But explaining just why
is a difficult thing
There are words and a voice
and a mystery to bring

a fragrance on the breeze
Carried in the air across

Heard and felt and witnessed

Appealing to my senses

By afternoon the wind was up
And the tide was really high
So we drove down to Goring
To watch the surfers fly
Sitting in the cafe there
With a coffee on the side
We had a perfect view
Of the rough and surging tide

‘At Sea’ – 2 0f 20 in ‘The Aegean Shores’ series

Slumber with the engine’s thrum
through decks one to five
Come morning though, the sunshine
makes us come alive
Streaming through our window
across a deep blue sea
This borders on perfection
for my soulmate, Sal, and me
