Last Day #5

by Jem Croucher

5 of 12 in the ‘Last Day 23’ series

And the last day of May
comes as June takes the stage
with a bow as summer returns
So good at long last to get a warm blast
of the sunshine as strongly it burns

So as May fades to silent
with its last curtain call
we applaud as it gave of its best
and brought us the sun for long days of fun
in exuberance of summer's zest

Start 9 (aka Calan Mai)

by Jem Croucher

9 of 12 in the ’12 months IV series’

Mayday and to jingling bells
around tall poles and dancers tells
and cries of joy and yodelling yells
first day of summer comes

Midway twixt the equinox
and summer solstice twirl the frocks
with brightly coloured stripy socks
first day of summer comes

So dance we will as dance we must
with 'Calan Mai's' tradition thrust
as to these open arms in trust
first day of summer comes

Ancient woodlands’ bequest

by Jem Croucher
The bluebells are blooming, it's that time of year
in the garden there under the tree
that gives shade from the sun
when their time has begun
for this lovely bright vision we see

One IX

by Jem Croucher

9 of 12 in the Jemverse series ’12 months V’

Maybe May will find me
on the beach once more
as warmer days get warmer
and summer waits in store
Maybe May will be the one
to see those doors flung wide
for long days in the sunshine
no more the place to hide
Maybe May will see these things
as they're the thing to do
for the fifth month and summer
are quite symbiotic too

First IX

by Jem Croucher

9 of 12 in the Jemverse series ’12 months III’

On our wall there hangs a Hockney
A print we hold so dear
as with its vibrant colour
always brings us lots of cheer

And as Hockney loves a hawthorn
it seemed appropriate to say
that the colour in the hedgerows now
is the one that is of May

May

by Jem Croucher

No.9 of 12 in the Jemverse ’12 months II’ series

May arrives with emerald glow
When Spring is here and in full flow
And oft to walking we will go
In the warm sunshine

May arrives as summer’s child
With warmer days and weather mild
On which we all will oft have smiled
With the warm sunshine

Twelve months five

by Jem Croucher

No. 10 of 12 in the Jemverse ’12 months’ series

On our wall there hangs a Hockney
print we bought at Tate last year
which with its bright strong colour
brings us constant cheer

And as Hockney loves a Hawthorn
it seemed appropriate to say
that the colour in the hedgerows now
are the birth flowers of May

Mock orange

by Jem Croucher

20160527_071549

The mock orange in my garden
has blossomed now it’s May
And its fragrance is abundant
at any time of day
Especially of an evening
when it fills the air with scent
And I stand there for a moment
Breathing in with good intent

The gift of May

by Jem Croucher

IMGP0076

A poem for Maytime
sitting out in the sun
The warmer air tells us
Springtime’s begun
There are dandelions
buttercups, daisies too
growing there in the grass
with the bells of blue

“GOD’S MIDWIFE” ~Deborah Avila

by I HAVE A VOICE

Joseph ~the carpenter~

balanced the awe-eyed

Daughter of Israel

as one more steady hoof moved forward~

Once more “no room” shook in the man’s heart,

The carpenter ~God’s midwife~

begged heavenward~
