Passion, Courage, Choice

by HemmingPlay

I have chosen to seek
each day the path of courage
and passion.
I fail, often.

I don’t
say this with bravado,
because I do not feel brave.
If I could choose something
easier, I would.
It never gets easier.

But to make the choice each day,
Each minute, to turn and
face the sadness and suffering,
of the world; the pain and joy,
each on it’s own terms
and not be defeated by it—
that is something that
must be chosen again,
and again, and again.
It is the job of poetry.
No compromises.

It is not a choice of pleasant fictions,
a diversion of entertaining nothingness;
nor like the fog of opium that
leaves us still breathing,
but dead.

Each night, darkness does not fall.
That is the wrong image.
Rather, when the earth spins away
from the sun, it rises up from the deep places
of the earth and the oceans, from
the caverns and the bottom of rivers and lakes and seas.
A deep exhalation.
A time for alternatives.

Do I Get Up

by Renwick Berchild

Do I get up. What will I have for breakfast.
Should I have breakfast at all. Will I take the bus or walk.
Talk to a stranger, perhaps not. How do I look today.
How do I feel today. What is my neighbor feeling today.
What is the scientific name for the maple tree.
What is the dog that is barking barking on about.
How shall I get on working today. How shall I have my tea.
Where shall I go to lunch. Is my friend swimming in the ocean.
Is my lover at Smith Tower. Is the grass sad.

It Ain’t Good Living

no need to tell me.
I need a jukebox and some booze
enough to drown.

I’m not here for free advice,

Chronic Misunderstandings

by Renwick Berchild

Sushi misunderstandings,
Damnable doors that only swing one way,
Cold slabs of meat that hang in windows,
Cars and cars and cars and cars and
Cars that crash beneath my balcony, voices spark,
Howl and groan and cry to their dead parents,
Dead lovers, dead selves,

4 Thimbles (Poems to Snack On)

by Renwick Berchild

Rewind

Blazer moonwalks through the doorframe
tipping the vase of marigolds
upwards, the crystal gathering
sharp spatters and supple petals,
placing them neatly
into predestined
grooves.

Come the End

by K. T. Dibert

Come the end, for I am ready;

Come the end, the world is heavy.

Lest I lie, or lest I leave,

The best of me

I will retrieve.

But if I breathe tomorrow my last,

And today is only

A thing of the past,

I will remember

The world and all its contrast:

The Grey Hair

by Renwick Berchild

Single silver,
Your shining countenance tells a long tale.
Your glow in the streetlight sings a song.

Hospital visits, sleepless nights,
Mornings flipping eggs and
Ballpoint pens scribbling
Death,
Dreams,
Bad philosophy,

A trip to Lewes

by Jem Croucher

IMGP0056

Took a wander round Lewes
thought that would be good
Had a beer at the snowdrop
and some rather nice food
Browsed some antique shops
dodging the rain
Through the Clarice Cliff price tags
were bad for my brain

Shoe

by Venkat

image

May I find a shoe, fit and fine
With a star’s sparkle on the edge
May it forget not, to pinch
To feel truths I step on, as mine

May I find a shoe, firm and agile
With a horse’s rhythm, engraved
May it forget not, to slow
To read people I carry, as mine

The summer of me

by Jem Croucher

When the morning air welcomes
From a night time that’s done
And the wind has died down
Giving warmth to the sun
And the sea’s a flat calm
Now the new day’s begun
The summer of me lives again

A life worth living
