Innocence

 

The sound of children

comes in swells

like the sea…. I love

how they fill the emptiness and silence

They gathered beneath the old oak tree

Bailey Bear and a duckling named Dea

Friends they’d been since left alone

When woodsmen took their mommies home

The sun shone bright as they planned their day

But breakfast was needed before they could play

Bailey searching for a honey hive

Dea beneath the waters where insects hide

Memory’s wisdom smiles

In a blue suit that I hated
I threw a flower to the wood
And felt the chill of March around me
By that deep hole where I stood
Fifteen years I’d known him
But his shell was now below
Wondered how I’d manage then
As at the time I didn’t know

The house was happy, it came alive
With a weekend visitor, of only five
Toys, trinkets scattered about
Laughter upon laughter, shout upon shout

Coverlet castles, firewood forts
Good guys, bad guys of all sorts
Dinosaurs, dragons, transformers too
Staged on the hearth; imagination flew
