Obi-Wan Kinobi

came to join our family
hip-hip, hip-hip, hooray

So May the Fourth

Begging your pardon

by Jem Croucher

The sunshine is glorious

here in the garden

so if you don’t mind

and begging your pardon

I’ll just sit me down

right here and right now

and turn my nose skyward

for the warmth on my brow

Pleasant enough

by Jem Croucher

It’s pleasant enough

sitting out in the sun

with a dog at my side

and a pen on the run

Capturing words

here in full flow

from the mind of a poet

Wolfgang came to visit

by Jem Croucher

Wolfgang came to visit

Sat down in the sun

Said with satisfaction

‘This is just why I have come’

He loves it in this garden

It is his home from home

and he really looks a picture

as I hope these words have shown

I ran and I ran

by Jem Croucher

There was ice in my field
round the tree in the middle
most of it solid
but some of it brittle
But I didn’t mind ‘cos
the ground it was firm
so my paws found their grip
with less squither and squirm
And I ran and I ran
my ears all at random
exploring three acres
in sheer joy abandon

Snow n me

by Jem Croucher

It wasn’t very nice
in my field this week you know
Cos my paws felt very cold
in some white stuff they call snow

I had a double layer
(my red jumper and a coat)
but my paws still feel the cold
(I’m just saying, make a note)

This field we walk

by Jem Croucher

This field we walk
our saving grace
and for result
we love this place
Changing as
the year goes by
and different things
each time we spy
The joy of seeing
running paws
and flapping ears
to much applauds

Wet paws

by Jem Croucher

It was quite damp in Obi’s field
near Ashurst, Sunday last
the rain came down like stair rods
and the sky was overcast
the ground was rather sodden
more marshland than a field
the penalty for being
in the flat of Sussex Weald

Obi’s safe place

by Jem Croucher

The sun outside the window
in these autumn days I’ll keep
as the warmth is nice to feel
in this chair where oft I sleep

I like it here, it is a place
where I feel safe, secure
and when the sunshine streams right in
it has for me allure

For I will find a certain spot
where I can rest my nose
and feel that warming sunshine
whilst I have a little dose

The big black dog he wasn’t there

by Jem Croucher

The big black dog he wasn’t there
this second Friday evening
but I wasn’t all that bothered
(it was actually quite relieving)
For it meant of course that all this space
was mine to run around
have a sniff, enjoy myself
my field on Sussex ground

My blue seat

by Jem Croucher

This seat out in the garden
like my neckerchief is blue
so I’ll often come and lie here
in the sunshine as you do
It’s perfect for my little legs
to lie on and relax
quite thoughtful of my humans
to provide for little chaps

My Field

by Jem Croucher

I have a field I go to
every Friday night
It’s mine to run around in
and there’s no-one else in sight
I’m also fairly certain
that no other dogs go there
I’ve certainly never seen one
and I don’t think they would dare

Affirmation

by Jem Croucher

Spent the day with family and Wolf
out in the bright summer sun
with social distancing observed as you do
for good conversation and fun

It almost felt normal and was for one thing
as we couldn’t get close for a hug
but even for that we’ve developed a thing
which we smile as we do with a shrug

Houndie House

by Jem Croucher

Found a field at Horsebridge
out near Ashurst way
for an hour of pure freedom
on an evening of a day
Three acres all protected
by a rabbit fence all round
with trees and luscious grass of green
upon the chalky ground

Lazy eye snuggle

A black nose nestled
in the crook of my arm
contented and dozing as we
sat late into an evening there
my soulmate Sally and me

Owning the cone

by Jem Croucher

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
was feeling a bit glum
He had to wear the ‘cone of shame’
for stitches in his bum
It wasn’t very comfortable
and he wasn’t all that sure
why he was made to wear it
and what it all was for

The comfort of home

by Jem Croucher

Swift to the morning
but with comfort of home
the night has slip-slid away
and all of a sudden
(and too soon it seems)
I’m here at the start of the day

Another autumn day revisited

by Jem Croucher

3 of 12 in the Jemverse ‘October’ series

A clear Autumn day, not a cloud in the sky
A mist that lies lurking like a child’s forlorn cry
A walk in the morning when no-one’s about
When a whisper is special. ‘cos you daren’t risk a shout
A broken old caravan, a cow in a field
A dog that likes running for Frisbees concealed
A field that is covered with a crisp, sparkling dew
A feeling of freshness, when everything’s new
A field of dry stubble that’s been burnt for the year
A farmer out walking (we’re not meant to be here)
A last throw of the Frisbee, then back on your lead
And home to make coffee and you then to feed

My Chair

by Jem Croucher

There’s a place in my house where I sit
and, if I chose to lose myself I can
Be it with reading or writing
or music or game
Sometimes Obi joins me
as it is for him safe haven
when there is something loud downstairs
My little brown comfort blanket
snuggled up and sleeping
in my chair beside me

To end a perfect day

by Jem Croucher

To end a perfect day
we walked along the beach
our small dog running free and proud
the sea in easy reach
The shadow of the sun
spread gold across the sky
A fitting end to perfect day
as together we strolled by

Bouncing

by Jem Croucher

Wolfgang was bouncing
and after his ball
We caught him on camera
which was a good call
Sometimes he caught it
sometimes he missed
But we always praised him
and gave him a kiss
Cos doggos need praising
and knowing you’re happy
Quite easy to do with
so bouncy a chappie

Basil

by Jem Croucher

Sir Basil Fawlty lived a life
as full as life can be
For almost eighteen years
he was within our family

A little border terrier cross
he was peace personified
Hardly ever growling
until the day he died

Small dogs and the cold stuff

by Jem Croucher

On the ground out the back
by the door in the snow
paw prints out there
with some evidence show
that although I’m uncertain
of the white stuff out there
I’ve been brave and I’ve ventured
outside for a dare
