by Frank Hubeny
This darkness isn’t such that I
Can brighten it by light I bring.
No laws of nature taint the sky.
No bonds bind it so it can’t sing.
The power failed, but should we wait
For what might not come speedily?
Some of us would hesitate,
But darkness helps our hearts to see.
We’re thankful for the light that’s near.
Praise sound, but not with our ears solely.
Our voices stir the darkness here
Repeating, “Holy, Holy, Holy.”
Merry Christmas

I Sit Alone
In The Silence
Of Another
Day Ending
In The Midst
Of A Darkening

Creeping
Onto The Walls
Chasing
The Light Away

I don’t know who I am yet
for I have not faced the darkest night
nor heard the howling demons
that hunger for my soul
I have not felt the razors edge
nor heard the wooing whispers
tempting me to use it
to let my blood be
the ink of my final poem

I love to sit in silence
in the darkness
in the Backside Of The Night
It’s silent
until I start to listen
intently
to my heart beating

I believe in the dawn

To those who fight the monsters
That lurk beneath the bed,
Who feign the fear of what they hear
In dark, they dare to tread.
They brave the creaking floorboards,
the attics full of bats,
Descend the flight of dim-lit stairs,
To dank dark dens of rats.

I cave backward at the knees,
Drown in the city.
Things that do not breathe take precedent over dreams.
Cannon fodder persuades, short dresses unravel into rape.
Humor bends the metal beams and pads the concrete,
But I sink inward at the cavity,
Fall in the city,
Fall and pull my eyelids low.

This is the lamplight: men in shredded jeans.
Men with holes in them, and the cool air.
Disciples of midnight blue
Take to the streets, and give motion
To the stillness, rolling shopping carts and hot
Ravings and slamming cars doors,
Full of bluster.
