Rain like summer

by Jem Croucher
On the station the rain was a comfort today
in the blackness of night still around
on the edge of a morning still hidden from view
with a gentle soft rushing of sound
Mist-like it drifted and cooled like a breeze
that summer would oft call a friend
yet it is still March and winter remains
several weeks yet from its natural end
So this morning with whimsy I breathed it all in
finding comfort as thought took a hold
thinking of Spring and the summer beyond
days of warmth to replace these of cold

Tri-haiku XXXVI (Warmth of weekends)

by Jem Croucher
The warmth of weekends
cosy from winter blankets
bodes well to the week

So with high spirits
Monday comes with gusto here
cocooned I embrace

And the warm embers
envelope and protect me
as the week proceeds

Tri-haiku XXXIV (the familiar)

by Jem Croucher
The familiar
just like a comfort blanket
all uniquely mine

Something I cling to
to remind me that today
everything is peace

And I breathe easy
with familiarity
born of pure content

I found a song it was lovely
and it gave me a buzz
with a warm mellow feeling
and simply because
music is like that
it causes no pain
though it hits you quite often
again and again
It's a friend and companion
a comfort and more
it's my constant craving
for repeated encore

Obi’s safe place

by Jem Croucher

The sun outside the window
in these autumn days I’ll keep
as the warmth is nice to feel
in this chair where oft I sleep

I like it here, it is a place
where I feel safe, secure
and when the sunshine streams right in
it has for me allure

For I will find a certain spot
where I can rest my nose
and feel that warming sunshine
whilst I have a little dose

Flames in the firepit
as evening draws in
and I’m out as the sun dies away
The crack from the wood
is a comfort and good
here at the end of the day

To see where I hide

by Jem Croucher

I have a small corner
with a chair and a cushion
Comfortable, it is a place to hide
albeit in plain sight
It is here that I escape into music
to while away hours lost to rhythm
safe in the knowledge
that this is my place
My sacrosanct
My place to hide
And dream
And breathe

The comfort of home

by Jem Croucher

Swift to the morning
but with comfort of home
the night has slip-slid away
and all of a sudden
(and too soon it seems)
I’m here at the start of the day

My Chair

by Jem Croucher

There’s a place in my house where I sit
and, if I chose to lose myself I can
Be it with reading or writing
or music or game
Sometimes Obi joins me
as it is for him safe haven
when there is something loud downstairs
My little brown comfort blanket
snuggled up and sleeping
in my chair beside me

At one with the sea

by Jem Croucher

Came to the sea
at its beckon and call
Embraced by its welcoming arms
Knew solace and comfort
The promise it gave
that here I would come to no harm

Our Prisons, Created by Us

by pranabaxom

The poem below was first published on my blog,, on July 31, 2018.

In our comfort zone,
We build our fortresses.
Keep out, we shout.
None that are
Not us,

Castle by the Sea

by Nick Anthony

The sun was shining on the bay that day,
And in its radiance I thought I saw the way
To my salvation from this, damn lonely, place.
“Liberation” was written on your face.

You left the beach before I learned your name,
And the memory of your face began to fade
Until that day I found you in the Kyoto snow.
When you gave me your hand, I knew I’d never let go.

I Look Up and Rejoice

by Angela Umphers Rueger

I have put my trust in God; I look up and rejoice.
To tell of all His praise, I gladly lift my voice.
For He is my Defense, my Comforter, my Guide,
My Shelter from the enemy; in Him I shall abide.

Comfort in Sound

by Jem Croucher

I’m plagiarising something
today, but never mind
‘Cos there’s every best intention
and it’s not meant to be unkind
For I have (as to be honest)
done a thing I often do
Been listening to music
and the sounds I loved and knew

Awaking to gold
spreading in from the east
like a comfort blanket;
It is my solace, this sunshine.
In its absence I pine like the loss of the sea
But together we live and are as one

Happy Mother’s Day

by Jem Croucher

Version 2

An early rose on Mother’s Day
appropriately there
exuding beauty in its form
combined with love to share
Fragrance subtle, petals frail
A heart concealed, yet strong
with influence and calming
for an early springtime song

One Day’s Grace

One Day’s Grace

April16 golden storm 016

After three very difficult years, people ask me all the time, how on earth did you make it through all that physically and mentally?  My answer was always grace for only one day at a time because that’s all you ever need anyway, no guarantees of another. All I know is God gives us grace when we need it, comfort when we hurt, joy to last the ages, and peace when there is fear.  Just ask for One Day’s Grace and step back and be amazed at how you’ll make through one day at a time at the foot of the cross.

When mountains loom in front of you so high

Crossing raging rivers trying to swim or die.

Raise your voice to Jesus, ask for One Day’s Grace.

That’s really all you need for what you have to face.

We dream of yellow

by Jem Croucher

In the gun-metal grey of midwinter
When cold grips vice-like
and, huddled in blankets
we stay cocooned in the warmth
of a fruitcake and hot tea afternoon
and dream of yellow

Some happy, some sad

Life can throw at me
One thing never changes
My constant, the sea

The circle

by Jem Croucher

I turned a full circle
looking out to the sea
safe in the knowledge
that it’s where I should be

The grey green of the ocean
and me on the shore
I have all that I need here
and could not ask for more
