Show me a colour, one that describes me
Look at my face – the colour behind my eyes
It cries for the sun and pines away on these rainy days
Curled in a ball and shivering,
It longs for a blue that paints the skies
I have a paintbox here somewhere; it has a bright palette
One I have used many times, mixing over and over
as old and dusty colours
lend their way to young ones bright and new
Blending easily with the marks I have made
For a brief moment in the sky
a rainbow glowed and caught my eye
but in a moment it was gone
replaced by lovely sun that shone
that briefly dried up all the rain
before the grey clouds came again
Vibrant this colour
at this golden time of year
when greenery fades
And the sunset comes
The years' full swansong sings loud
with echos to gold
Leaving me speechless
Silenced by this golden awe
at the curtain call
Went for a walk in a painting
the colours vibrant and bright
the artists' palette singing to me
as a I swooned in this wonderful sight
Reds and golds and yellows and pink
with green in the background were there
a wash of pale blue and a purple for depth
conveyed by the artist to share
Come closer. I’ll show you a colour – one that describes me.
Is it blue or a yellow or an autumn gold? Is it mellow green
Or amber or purple or silver? Is it a deep, burning orange
Or any one of the hundred thousand colours you have seen?
No, it is none of these and yet every one of them. The song is loud
And though it fades, like raindrop rings, it will never, ever leave.
Show me a colour, one that describes me
Look at my face – the colour behind my eyes
It cries for the sun and pines away on these rainy days
Curled in a ball and shivering,
It longs for a blue that paints the skies
I have a paintbox here somewhere; it has a bright palette
One I have used many times, mixing over and over
as old and dusty colours
lend their way to young ones bright and new
Blending easily with the marks I have made
The nasturtiums’ gone ballistic
even though the summer’s gone
as it’s reaching now to skyward
and its stems are very long
It’s spreading ‘cross the garden
showing no sign of demise
which with its splash of colour
at this time of year is wise
These sweet pea colours vibrant
fill our garden with their joy
their aim to please and satisfy
self-evident thieir ploy
Success, just like their name is sweet
with purples, reds and blue
this painting full of colour
we will never here eschew
It was really quite hot
but the colour right there
showed me one thing
that the sun had a care
For it with the rain
when that comes gives us this
a garden that’s lovely
for joy and for bliss
The variegated colour of
our Nasturtiums in full bloom
return year after year
when they first appear in June
They really are quite lovely
and I’m glad they reappear
as their colour in the garden
brings us pleasure, yes and cheer
I saw splashes of colour
like rain falling down
A rainstorm of rainbows
to dispel any frown
So I danced as the colour
fell all around me
soaking and soothing
and setting me free
I am all things colour
I look for a smile
Especially when
they’re not seen for a while
But it’s easier when
the sunshine comes out
and there’s things like
Spring and Summer about
Yellow comes and yellow goes
but with consistency it shows
that yellow carries summer days
the brightest sun, the mellow haze
So it finds favour just because
yellow is and yellow does
Outside the weather
reminds me again
that winter’s still here
with the wind and the rain
It’s blowing so hard
with a howl and a moan
from the cold of the north
where it’s festered and grown
And the light this morning
emulates a clarity anew
Captured on the coast road
as I pass with clear sea view
Pastel pinks and subtle blue
Oranges and yellow
confirming absolutely that
I am a lucky fellow
