Treasure Trove II

I get lost in a good bookshop
they are like a treasure trove
and fortunately Lewes town
has them in spades and droves

So of a Wednesday morning
with the sunshine proving warm
we drove there for a browsing
which for us has been the norm

And in a darkened basement
I found Nirvana waiting there
shelves of ancient volumes
just waiting there to share

their secrets with the reader
who will in their pages find
the treasures that I speak of
for the soul and for the mind

Yes, I get lost in a good bookshop
for with patience and good measure
I know that every time I come
I'll find a waiting treasure.

Pilgrim’s Progress

Found a copy of the ‘Progress’
it was just three ninety-nine
from the Oxfam shop in Worthing
thought, ‘I’d like that to be mine’

So I gave the lady waiting
the price there on the back
and took the volume home with me
to place on my bookrack

buckets brimless, bumble
brains bookless, babble
baked boneless, beliefs borne
bare bones, blessed books bind

My Favorite Book

Of all the books I love to read,
There’s one I especially favor.

Last Day (1) – Senryu

Students in the halls
Lockers clang open and shut.
Shouts of joy resound.

Almost Done (Senryu)

Final exam week
Students pore over their notes
Time for the test

Let This Poem Remember Me

Let this room remember me. Let it fill with my scent.

The scent of valerian root, chardonnay, the air of musk and smoke,
damp moss upon the old tombstone, the wet sapling pine.

The late evening sun is the day’s last attempt to sway me.
She spills her warmest rays over the peacock rug, subjugates herself and genuflects
over the altars, over my desk and kitchen countertop.

in a room with over-sized books

In a room with over-sized books
and a dungy wing-back chair,
I am invited to sit

Magic words reveal themselves

From pages of a book

Written once, so long ago

These visions overlooked

Hindsight

to all the books i didn’t read
their spines unbent, their worlds uncharted,
to all the maps i never opened
to trawl through dusty cities and temple ruins

She strung words together
Glass beads on a necklace
Weaving a weeping tapestry
Fingers bird-boned, nimble

whiskey in a teacup

He met her at a bookstore
Lost in millions of books and
Tangled in a thousand lives
She wore ugly red glasses
With mismatched old shoes
She seemed at first glance
To be just another lost girl
She was a thin golden slice

You’re a cool breeze
On a burning summers day
My antidote to pain
You take it all away

In a classroom of monotony
A lazy daydream to flit time
In a world full of darkness
A golden day, sublime

Quite chuffed

 

Walking home through Worthing
Having had a Cornish ale
I happen chanced upon a sign
‘The Worthing library sale’

Neath the covers with flashlight glow
I’d read until the light dimmed low
‘The Readers Digest’ handed down
A plethora of words there to be found

Life from the armchair

I’ve sat here for what seems forever

The chair carries an imprint of me

Of rainy days and cups of tea

Of breezy sunny days and a pile of  books on my lap

Oh the places I went, the scents I breathed

The friends I made, the men I have loved

All in the palm of these two trembling hands
