Achievement and Pride

We’ve walked a hundred miles
my brother Dave and me
The South Downs Way from Winchester
to Eastbourne by the sea
And when we reached the signpost
at the end we both agreed
that the feeling of achievement
was very good indeed

The yellow road

on top of Bignor Hill
We came across the yellow road
heading homeward still
Mostly blue sky overhead
with tiny flecks of grey
The sunshine on the yellow shone
to show us both the way

Sits empty and alone
No medal claimed
No queen enthroned
She sees the need
But not the success
Forever saddened
She’s not the best
The victory song
Rings out unheard
Her victory speech-
Not a word.
She making lists
And making demands
Her life’s not lived-
It’s planned
