I held mystery closer and
Let if fall over every story
I knew about the world and who I was –
And I
Made my way back
Into a stillness filled
With moving points of light

These are the eyes
Of an older madonna-
Eyes once mistaken,
Forsaken and seared-

Sister Claire
She was a nun,
And she was my teacher.

Loved to play skipping,
Chewed gum

The question wasn’t complicated,
The answer was.
She asked, “what’s undone in your life?”
I wanted to answer something about
Loves unknown or trips untaken.
I wanted to answer something about
Something invisible-
But my first thought was
“Me, I’m undone.”

Eating snow-
Again!
And she was furious
So
I didn’t dare tell her

I believe we reach
For what we might never hold-
That we find strength after testing
And create peace from its pain.

We sit together
on the front steps of her house-
old friends, chosen sisters.
We look for words of comfort,
we find each other.
I miss my parents,
she misses her mother-
just weeks apart,
just weeks ago.
