What’s The Best Pet for a Girl When She’s Four?

by PookyH

Life was exciting for a girl named Ellie,
She was planning a party with cake cards and jelly,
In a very short time she was going to be four,
She was excited about not being three anymore.
The party aside she had reason to smile,
You see she’d been asking her Mum for a while,
If she could have a pet, but Mum always said no,
But for her fourth birthday Mum promised to go
To the pet shop with Ellie and buy her a pet,
Now the big question was about which pet to get.
Can I please get an ant? Ellie questioned her Mum.
They build little tunnels, to watch would be fun!

Old Age Imagined

by PookyH

As I watched him shuffle,
With an old man’s walk,
And I heard him mutter,
With an old man’s talk,
I found myself thinking,
I just couldn’t bear,
To live to be older,
With thin greying hair,
And with legs that don’t work,
And with eyes that don’t see.
No,
That wouldn’t be the right life for me.

Newborn Moments

by PookyH

When I look at you,

I know what love looks like.

When I hear you sigh,

I know what love sounds like.

What did you do at school dear?

by PookyH

Monday

“What did you do at school dear?”

Said the Mother,

Her mind on the road.

“In science we did an experiment, Mum

We turned a prince into a toad!”

“Oh really? That’s lovely, how nice dear.”

Said the Mother,

Mind still on the road.

Tuesday

“What did you do at school dear?”

Said the Mother,

Checking her phone.

“In history we went back in time, Mum

And a witch turned my friend into stone.”

“Oh really? That’s lovely, how nice dear.”

Said the Mother,

Still on checking her phone.

Lyra, Ellie and the Crocodile

by PookyH

Lyra and Ellie went to the park,

In search of some fun and some games,

Like a turn on the swings,

Or a trip down the slide,

Or a go on the big climbing frames.

But when they arrived,

There was nobody there,

The park was completely deserted.

Empty of children and parents as well,

But the girls didn’t feel disconcerted.

Bedtime

by PookyH

“It’s time for bed”

She called in vain,

Her calls went quite unheard.

Jane was chasing spiders.

John was drawing birds.

“It’s time for bed”

She called again,

This time a little louder.

Jane turned up her music.

John fed the cat some powder.

Being Three

by PookyH

It was not fun when I was none,

I couldn’t pick my nose or run,

I simply lay about all day,

I wasn’t big enough to play.

It was more fun when I was one,

I liked to play and get things done,

Like mixing paints and chasing cats,

And wearing multicoloured hats.

Stigma (a poem for World Mental Health Day)

by PookyH

Why do you always stop and stare?

Is it because I’m ‘not all there’?

Do you think I’m a freak?

Or a nut?

Or a loon?

That I’ll howl like a wolf when it’s next a full moon?

You try to avoid me.

You think that I’m dangerous.

Do you think that the illness I have is contagious?

Memories – A Kyrielle Sonnet

by PookyH

Memories are dishonest things,

Over time they grow warts or wings.

They can cause grief, or fights or fuss,

Sometimes those white lies comfort us.

That mountain that we tried to climb,

And found all too adventurous,

We climbed it in our mind’s own eye,

Sometimes those white lies comfort us.

No Words

by PookyH

Sometimes there are no words,

I’ve found

My search goes unfulfilled.

I look about

Eyes up,

Eyes down,

My inspiration’s drowned.

Some things are just too hard for words.

And though words are my friend,

It’s times I really need them most,

That friendship seems to end.

Far Flung Friends

by PookyH

True friendship knows not bounds of time,
Nor distance, it is true.
The few real friends you have in life
Are always dear to you.

A true friend’s one who’s always there,
Through all life’s ups and downs.
A true friend makes a moment spare
To share your smiles and frowns.

The Journey

by PookyH

The train ploughs on – with every passing mile,
I’m further from my home, my rock, my love.
I glance at passing trees and fields and houses,
And think of my home with a fleeting smile.

These blurs of others’ homes mean nothing to me
And act as cruel reminders of my own
But somewhere, headed in the other direction,
Is someone counting moments ’til they’re home…

The Poetry Lesson

by PookyH

“A poem shouldn’t rhyme” she said,

I thought about that hard.

“Use only the very best words” she said,

And I promised myself that I would.

Rhyme taunted and tainted my every attempt,

At crafting a beautiful poem.

Around every corner it lurked and it lured,

Siren-like reeling me in.

Late

by PookyH

Late again!
Bloody train,
It’s the third time this week
That my crushing commute
Has had to take a back seat
To signalling issues,
And leaves on the line,
Or not enough drivers.
Trains never on time.

Challenge

by PookyH

A challenge is only a challenge,

If you feel a little bit scared.

If your heart’s racing,

Feet rapidly pacing,

And you feel utterly under-prepared.

Then you are faced with a challenge,

And the most incredible choice…

A Ripe Old Age

by PookyH

When you die at 99,
Then people tend to say:
“A ripe age!”
“Good innings!”
“A life well lived!”
But we wanted another day.

Another day to talk to you,
And laugh at times gone by,
Another day to hold your hand,
It was too soon to say goodbye.

A Dragon Named Paul

by PookyH

In a faraway land where the sea meets the sky,

And the hills are marshmallows and the rocks are alive,

Live a colony of dragons – the regular sort –

With fire-breathing bellies, who eat children for sport.

They fill children with fear, and animals too

(When there’s no girls for dinner, a puppy will do).

Their breath is appalling, their manners atrocious,

Breeding fear and loathing is their only true focus.

Except for one dragon who’s not scary at all,

A mild-mannered dragon the others call Paul.
