Fat Cheshire Cat

by mzanemcclellan

I have indulged
overmuch
in the vintage
of self estimation,
imbibed the distilled
liquor of sycophants,
I am drunk with power.

Midnight Flowers in Clouds

by mzanemcclellan

Midnight clouds
hug the ground
mingling with
the gauzy fog
to shield the earth
from the baleful moon.

More War

by mzanemcclellan

We have engaged in war before,
before the war beyond the shore.

And we have shed our blood, and more.

More blood I have not seen before.

Another Year

by mzanemcclellan

Poetry challenge: new year poem.

.
Here we are
at another artificial
division,
arbitrary distinction,
in the flow’s design.
An abstraction we experience
linearly
punctuated by episodic
circumstances
playing themselves out
over time.
Some,
heartbreakingly painful,
such as loves lost,
others, utterly sublime.

Come Together

by mzanemcclellan

For all of the Radicals
who have gone on sabbatical
after turning on, tuning out
during the sixties,
it’s time to get over
your cul-de-sac home and Land Rover,
there are still problems,
and we need you to help fix these.

Venus Envy

by mzanemcclellan

Oh Brightness,
morning and eve,
mistaken for a star,
I would prefer
that I were you
rather than
the Red Planet,
Mars.

Beneath the Ice

by mzanemcclellan

Beneath the ice, cold waters flow.
As dark and deep the world below,
life that moves with beauty and grace.
So much we do not know

Rare Earth

by mzanemcclellan

What will you tell
the Mother
when she welcomes
you back
back again,
back into her bosom?
When she asks you why
you did nothing,
stood idly by,
as they drained
and befouled
her aquifers
drove her children
to extinction
for their ivory
and furs

A Thousand Sparks

by mzanemcclellan

We were telling stories
before hitting the hay,
vaporous fingerlings
reaching out from
exhausted coals
to yawning mouths
and fist-rubbed eyes.
You wandered in
out of the night.

On Bloody Sands

by mzanemcclellan

The tar black grains of briny beach,
of plaintive cries, the Gods beseeched.
Imploring mercy for a soul
upon whom war has taken its toll.

Desert Sand soaked in oil and blood,
thirst unquenched since biblical flood.

The air thick with diesel exhaust,

air’s coppery taste from blood lost.

Cold, Cold Heart

by mzanemcclellan

I had been
out in the cold
too long
when she called me in.
My extremities
we’re completely
numb.

echoes in my soul.

All Hallows ‘ Grieve

by mzanemcclellan

Late at night, the silence cleaved, with sudden bluster, on All Hallows’ Eve.
Winds rose to stir the trees, rattled my nerves, shutters and doors.
As I settled, still somnolent, I realized the dark portent.
My eyes widened at whispered words, whispered as softly as the coo of birds.
“Your time has come,” a voice did say, words ominous, and they did weigh.
I prayed the voice would go away.

Medieval Madness

by mzanemcclellan

Perhaps it was chance
that planted the seed,
and fate that it blossomed
in a garden of weed

where he floated across
a cloud of smoke
through hookah pipe castles
with hashish moats

Delight in Darkness

by mzanemcclellan

For most it’s deemed
an affliction,
but for me
it has been
a benediction.
I have always
preferred the
quiet of the night,
the cool,
the less bright.
My eyes sigh
at shadows
but wince
in glare.
I can feel my pupils
dilating
in darkness,
opening to the
possibilities
lurking somewhere …
out there.

Tear Down These Walls

by mzanemcclellan

My tongue is restless.
Pressing
against the roof
of my mouth.
Blocking
my epiglottis,
cutting off the flow
of my breath,
the flow,
in or out.

Perhaps it Was

by mzanemcclellan

Perhaps it was a mourning dove,
or other bird I’m thinking of,
fluttering as it took to wing
to rest atop the tree and sing
the lamenting coo of its lost love.

our aces, in holes
standing stories tall.

Tug of War

it spanned.

the central theme,
the thread
that binds
my every seam,
the pieces
of my
recurring dream,
or so it seems.

Solar Sojourn

by mzanemcclellan

I fly across space
to flow above your horizon
and smile down
on your shores,
strips of sandy collars
buttoned up tightly
to the neck
of the oceans that span
the globe.

We Are As Raindrops

by mzanemcclellan

We are as raindrops from Heaven’s sky,
scattered o’er earth’s plains and mountains high.
To collect in pools of common need,
flow with fellow souls where they may lead.

meteoric
from the outer

A trail of

cosmic dust,

Comes the Rain

by mzanemcclellan

I love the feel
in the air
just before it rains.
I am drawn
to the energy of it.
Beginning with
the hair on my arms
standing on end.
Then the smell of water
coalescing all about me.
I watch the dark clouds
surf in on the crest
of the silvered,
curling wave.

The Mountain Seen

by mzanemcclellan

I have seen the mountains
though not been to their top,
wandered in the foothills,
stumbled but have not stopped.
Bedraggled and footsore,
ache permeates my soul.
Pain tells me I’m alive,
this zombie on the road.
