Autumn (in South Africa)

by kim blades, writer

A season of azure skies

umblemished by clouds

still, dusty air

and tranquil warmth.

The choppy ocean swell
I share the water with fishes and rays

The other nations of this Earth

by The Cheesesellers Wife

The other nations of this Earth live along side us
Misunderstood, undervalued, used and abused
So many of us not longer see them
We fortunate few may wilfully misunderstand

The Smell of bees

by The Cheesesellers Wife

I saw my first bee today, hearing buzzing while weeding
I searched for the little fellow and found him
Bumbling around the Lungwort
Buzzing with glee in the surprise warmth
Black, gold with a red bum

M1 in Winter (Watford Gap 1 mile)

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Mist enwrapped trees extinguish the low orange glow of the Sun
Taillights warm the twilight ahead
Headlights shine on traffic cones and road workers  jackets
Jagged shadows in a field reveal a ruined brick barn

Boys

Boys

Long legged boys
Filling my sofa
Controllers in hand
Deep laughs mingle with shrill cries
As Black Ops rolls

Illuminates walkers breasting the darkening hill

Illium: poem

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Illium

Upon the ancient plain the army sits in perpetual siege
Waiting for Achilles to unsulk
To leave his tent and re-enter the fray
What goes through their minds?

Photos

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Photos

Moments set in the aspic of a photo
Smiles captured in chemical emulsions
Or the many pixels of light sensitive electronics
Laughter lost in time and space

Robin in the fig tree

by The Cheesesellers Wife

What are the words?
Bright, cheery red, bob-bob-bobbing?
My Robin has read Ted Hughes
He pulls worms fighting from the stiff soil
Terrorises chickens, birds a hundred times his size

With a domed centre
Lies peacefully in the bright sun
Where once violence played

Between words

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Between words

Between words
When spoken, are the painful pauses
The hidden meanings
The thinking time
The space to ruin it all
With a trite response
A hurt reaction
When written?

Do the stones collect impressions?
Perhaps imprinted like old photographs
Perhaps locked in their silicon crystals

Green in Gray

Green in Gray

Lava once flowed here to meet the ocean in hissing and steam
Cooled into writhing shapes that tear our feet as we clamber over

Glass bottomed boat

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Glass bottomed boat

Swaying bobbing we peer through the hull
Eagle Rays swish beneath us chasing the unknown
Light glints on a startled shoal sashaying across the rocks
Gas bubbles up from volcanic clefts
Crabs glance sideways, looking for the main chance

Lava Tunnel

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Lava Tunnel

In a simple field, no different from any other
Is a clump of small trees with a dark secret
Amongst their roots, we tiptoe down a rocky slope
Into blackness.

Ocean of Storms

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Oceanus Procellarum, or the Ocean of Storms is a large area on the Moon. It forms part of the Man in the Moon that you see at full Moon. One day the name just kept on rolling around my tongue, until this poem arrived.

Watercolour Sky

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Watercolour Sky

The image is built  in a series of layers
First, a pale blue wash across the sky
Then, broad brush strokes of pale icy cirrus
With pen details of contrails crossing at the midpoint

Sculpting the desired form
From the larger rock
Before going on the hunt.

The School trip

The School Trip

Long limbs, freckled cheeks,
He slips between us in the bed.
It’s nearly time to go.
We hold him, all nervous and excited,
The week long trip looms.

I live in silences.

The unease of an empty house
The loneliness of children gone
The sadness of a lover away
The concentration of a painting class
The contemplation of piece of art

Broken Cable

by The Cheesesellers Wife

Broken Cable

In the middle of the bright Atlantic
Floating on the swell between island volcanoes
Beneath reflective surface tension
Silvered gas bubbles catch the light
And, across the issuing rift,
A long snake of data cable
Broken sheared twisted.
