A National Mahjong Day Limerick

by Joel Kravitz

mahjong day (2)

There’s the sound of MahJong tiles cracking
And Jewish women snacking and yakking.
And there’s high stakes games
Where tempers burst into flames
With big pots and the players packing.

I am familiar with the game though I have never played it. My mom played Mahjong and I know many ladies who enjoy the social aspects of a friendly game with lots of yakking and snacking. I also know that it can be a high stakes gambling game. I used to eat lunch on Saturdays at a Chinese restaurant where there was one of those games. We’d be sitting in the dining room and hear the tiles cracking and lots of yelling coming from a “backroom.” I took a peak in there and saw piles of cash and guns on the table. Not the same game mom played.
