The red and the barb

by Jem Croucher

Virginia creeper spreading red
seen through barbed wire there
quite stunning in its beauty
that I simply had to share

Raw though still it touched a nerve
with something more unkinder
stark against reality
in contrast a reminder

A barb to prick contentment
reminding me that still
despite the beauty here to see
there lurks behind an ill

But that was overshadowed
and all ills were disregarded
as faced here with this beauty
my senses were bombarded

So I could only see beyond
the barbs right through the wire
to the gorgeousness that lay beyond
and all that red admire
