To the woods

by Jem Croucher

To the woods in the rain
To sit by the fire
And warm up my hands in the dry
The sound of the drops
As it hammered down lots
And the summer hurried on by

To the woods in the rain
As autumn came fast
And the air turned cooler and grey
But the flames took a hold
To keep out the cold
And lifted my spirits to play

To the woods in the rain
With woodsmoke around
Providing a fragrance sublime
And we all drank it up
As it re-filled our cup
To savour just like a good wine
