Best Ever

by Jem Croucher

I found a hagstone on the beach
it was the best I’ve found
amongst the other pebbles there
just waiting on the ground

It’s flat and Barbara Hepworth-like
a tactile thing to touch
and it will now take pride of place
amongst those I love so much

For though I’ve many hagstones
which I keep in easy reach
this one is the best ever
that I’ve found on Shoreham beach

Photo – Jempics [A hagstone is a natural thing; a stone or pebble sculpted by the sea with a hole right through. I try to find at least one every time I go to the beach – so I have (literally) hundreds. This though is the best I’ve ever found and is now on my keyring].

  1. I’d never heard of hagstones, and I’ll definitely be keeping a look out for one next time I’m walking on the beach! Are there certain types of beach they’re more prevalent? Thanks! …
