The Counselor

Sometimes I lay awake in the
dark and wonder what might have been
if…if

Would the person I was way back
then even recognize this world
of lies

Such a divisive sensation
imagining unknowable
secrets

But then again I remember
when truth was the currency I
traded

Pain was an inconvenience to
be met with broad shoulders and
strong hearts

I pushed until my misguided
compass broke under the weight of
it all

Such are the lamentations of
those foolish enough give up
I say

I collect excuses one by
one and build a castle christened
Future
