    Autumn

So many things

are vulnerable to cold—

the cucumber’s crisp

and my sweet basil’s toes,

the burdock thistle

and begonia’s red heart—

like the flit and flutter

from the last monarch.

Even the meadow’s hue

looks broken and brown

with the dead headed mustard

and the milkweed’s crown.

The birch has turned yellow

and the aspen’s burn gold—

with a tremble and shake

like these hands I fold—

so many things

are vulnerable to cold.
