The Handrail

by Harry

Submitted by Colan Hiatt

A handrail for the steps was installed
In the house many years ago
Another of the basic things
To aid when up and down we go

In former years, I would rarely use
Then I could navigate with ease
It would only slow me down
To scurry up and down, it was a breeze

But with progressing years, I found
It was not a nuisance after all
More and more, I would rely on it
As it would help me not to fall

How many times, in youth I chose
To simply do things, “my way”
Then storms and trials I encountered
I found the answer was to pray

The door He answered, when I knocked
His Word was a handrail I could grasp
When I became weary, He was there
His nail scarred hand, I could clasp

I know that beyond this veil of tears
True joy awaits, at the top of the stairs
Each step, brings me closer home
Then I’ll be free from all my cares

So the handrail, He has given me
Will aid me as I climb
His Word, His promise, and His grace
I find they always, are sublime
