Unconditional love shines in his eyes

oval, slightly tilted, black-rimmed green eyes

flecked with gold, large and unblinking

‘I love my owner so much,’ he is thinking.

She strokes my back and scratches my head

and every night I sleep on her bed,

my owner makes sure I’m fed and deflead

she is aware of and responsive to my every need.

I’m glad she sees the love in my eyes

my shining, demonstrative, slightly tilted green eyes

and from her long-lashed blue eyes that mirror a calm sea

I see the same unconditional love shining back at me.
