An Ordinary Day

by HemmingPlay

She had wanted to
sell the house.
She thought
he’d go first
leaving her alone.

Everything happens
on an ordinary day.
A plane full of
families falls out of
a clear blue sky.
A young mother dies on
a country road after dropping her
daughter at school.

A diagnosis changes everything,
dropping without warning,
from a clear December sky.

He wakes before dawn,
listens to her breathing,
The sky’s still dark.
All the years of
ordinary days have come
to this.
What will it be like,
he wonders, to
walk through these rooms
when her voice is silent?
