(THEY DID WHAT THEY HAD TO DO)
By Charles Robert Lindholm
We watch them from the sidelines
we call them and they come
they see the risks and dangers
yet towards them they will run
the very best among us
step forward, one and all
they hear the distant drummer
and answer duty’s call
we watch in awe and gratitude
at the lives they choose to lead
protecting us with service
in our greatest need
we owe a debt, beyond our means
we never can repay
that’s why we should acknowledge it
in the words we have to say
the warriors, past and present
the first responders too
heard the call of duty
and did what they had to do
we mark the names upon a wall
of the Fallen, but not forgotten
the hidden heroes, one and all
who paid the price for us
the survivors and the fallen
have given a gift to you
our freedom and the memories
because they did what they had to do
