Resting Lion

by kim blades, writer

This is where the lion lies

on golden grass

with silent flies

on his moister parts –

flared black nostrils

panting pink jaws

are darkly crowded hostels,

even on his great paws.

He has just eaten his fill

and is clearly sated

with meat from his kill

claws still blood tainted.

This is where he likes to rest

to soak up the sun

and calm his heaving chest

while his family still feed,

he has eaten the best

but left what they need.

This is where the lion lies

until the sun beneath the horizon slides.
