Orders

by Abigail Gronway

Once they stood in straight rows at attention,
Awaiting orders from the high command.
To keep their nation free was their intention,
And so they bravely fought and took their stand.
But order turned to chaos. Bombs illumined
The battlefield now torn and stained with blood.

The enemy they faced with great acumen
Had vanquished many, fallen in the mud.
The victory was won because the bravest
Gave their lives with love that would not cease.
Now they lie in straight rows at parade rest
Their only order here is: “Rest in peace.”
