Melaka #4 – Digging History

by To Be Determined

What do we do with history that possesses us
When we want to possess our history?

Where do we begin telling a story
That has slain our fathers
In gutters, and mothers, alone,
Imagine tongkangs of passengers
Arriving to explain heritage
Set aside like pieces of poetry
Not written by anyone, but there
For the taking?

What do we do with history that escapes us,
When we want to escape our history?

Broken pieces,
Three people reassemble without Swedes
To guide them with throwaway Allens.
Cultures mélange mingling
Like teenagers dance in flirtation
With passion, if consummated
Destroys or births new unions
Whole.

Should we dig it up or just plow it under
Deeper than we have ever plowed before?
