The Poppy (Part 1)

by JJ Merryweather

ww3The Poppy (Part 1)

Mud. Blood. Mustard Gas. Firing squad, Deserters.

Shell shock. Corpses. Germans trying to hurt us.

Poppy seeds. Rank disease. The bullet, bomb and gun.

A whistle blows, the final push, face to face with Evil Hun

Death and disfigurement. Land mines. Barbed wire.

Loud bangs. Amputees. We’re coming under fire.

Medals. Widows. Orphans. A stiff upper lip.

Victory. Thanks to God. But was it really worth it?

  1. It’s a good question – was it worth it? Please don’t let Mr Donald Trump think it is…again…and again…as the song ‘Young Willy Mc Bride’ says
