Split

by Renwick Berchild

Make up your mind.

Do you believe you are a star
falling to earth?

Heavenward is the water
rising from the ocean back into your hands.

The ancient Greeks tell me Sleep is kin to Death.
How I die in dreams is like an ejection
back into my body’s body, back into
my faith’s faith.

I cannot hold the tails of these two animals
that are determined to race west and east.

Make up your mind.

When there is a fork in the heart,
the blood splits in two.

But I cannot split, without spilling
everything.
