The Rose

by kim blades, writer

The golden ‘South Africa’ rose

even though bred to withstand the heat

is struggling to maintain its pose

and not wilt like a dead-beat.

Pink hued inner petals curl inwards

to protect delicate stamens –

tiny pollen swathed swords

fending off heat daemons.

Valiantly the rose fights through

the diabolical mid-summer swelter

helped by the morning dew

and hot rain falling helter-skelter.
