On Writing Poetry

We write
not so as to move
other minds toward passion
not so as to remove mountains
or to fill the seas with dark tears
We write in response to the knock
on our spirit’s door at midnight
by a guest who we cannot see
a light sheathed in shadow
a guest we know
by heart
