She Waits for a Sign

by Rellick

She waits at the window
As she’s done every night
Staring into the darkness
For a sign from her lost love

Oh, for the sound of his footsteps
On the front porch she yearns, yet
Except for the lonely coyotes howl
The night is so deadly silent
She believes in her heart
He’ll someday return
He’ll arrive and hold her tight
Never to wonder off again
Eleven years now have passed
The children have long since left
She now walks down to the lake
Disappearing into the misty wake
