Fireworks

by Tiffany Layne

Do you remember-
We saw fireworks every night
When I looked at you
There were sparklers in your eyes
It was the summer of
The first time we fell in love
You lit up my life,
It was like dusk on the 4th of July.

Time went by-
And wedding bells and baby showers
It was a natural high
Every time you brought me flowers
Those were the years we
Built a family
Those babies lit up my life
It was like dusk on the 4th of July

Sometimes we fell-
I kicked and screamed and threw coffee mugs
You got mad and yelled,
Then we swept it all under the rug
We learned how to be friends
How to fall in love all over again
The future looked so bright
It was like dusk on the 4th of July

Now there’s a little one-
I’m a grandma with a rocking chair
I’m just glad
I don’t have too many gray hairs
Between the kids, the dogs, the house, the cars
It doesn’t always go just right
But our love still sparkles and shines
Just like dusk on the 4th of July.
