The Phone Call

by William

June 12th is the date

Almost ten is the time

Next to the phone I do wait

Will it ring now or be a little late

I stand there quietly waiting

Please ring now, no more hesitating

As the clock strikes ten

The phone begins to ring

I lift the phone and say “Hello”

There was no answer, no words did flow

“Hello” I repeated and then softly “Goodbye”

Still no response yet it made me cry

I slowly put down the phone and wiped my eyes

June 12th – you left us on that day

A motor vehicle accident took you away

I never did get the chance to say my goodbyes

Every June 12th I get this call

My phone company just sighs

For this call, they have no record at all

But I know it is you, just saying your goodbyes

A little strange, it may sound

But on June 12th I’ve found

I’m always happy to hear the phone ring

Even though you never say a thing
