My Promise to You

by Karen

I watch you walk toward me

Dragging your bag behind

Your feet as heavy

As your heart

Your eyes riveted to the ground

I put my arms around you

I can feel you trembling

And my soul shatters

Into a million pieces – again

I grasp your face

Between my palms

And look into your eyes

“Hold your head up high

‘Cos I hate to see you cry

You’re stronger than you know

It’s time to let those feelings go.”

I wish I could cradle you

Hold you safe in my cocoon

And shield you from all that is wrong in this world

But you’re so big now

I want you to know

That I will lift you upon my back

And carry you whenever you need me

I will always be there for you

Even after I have taken my final breath

Of this life.
