Heartbreak

by Lakshmi

how do i explain that heartbreak
is not in bitter whisky on a november night
how do i explain that heartbreak
is not in blood on glass or that haunting piano waltz

it is in the empty nights when you’re alone
and looking at the pictures you’re not in
it is in the crowded bus stand when you
recognise the faces who trampled you into dust

it is in the early hours of the morning
when you block, delete numbers and erase images
when you feel like running as far as you can
to get away from every acrid memory stabbing your heart

it is in the hopelessness that beats everything
out of you, and doesn’t let you think about
anything but
this goddamned fucking mess
anything else
apart from
the fact that you weren’t enough.
