Lonesome Animals

We move
like amoeba
in a Petri dish
around each other
now in the office cubicle
now at the coffee machine
careful of the boundaries
as politically correct
as office decorum
requires of us
Insulated

Isolated
we ride home
packed like sardines
strangers to strangers
on the subway or the bus
careful to avoid eye contact
lest we be seen as friendly
by any without friends
fearful of knowing
of being known
So all alone

“We are lonesome animals. We spend
all life trying to be less lonesome . . .” ~ John Steinbeck
