Where once were wings

You speak of freedom

as if it were a lasting thing

I am free to

do what I want

when I want

how I want

I am free

to be me

You stare at the birds

and the bees

and the butterflies

I am as free as they are

you say

Forgetting that wings

won’t always enable you to

fly

And freedom is

a transient thing

But I envy you

your carefree attitude

Perhaps because you are still

Young

You are yet to experience

the pain of life

the limitations

those things

that make us forget

How easy it once was

to be free
