The Voiceless

Trapped in a skin now slack
Barely enough movement in my back
Crowing noise is all I can say
To greet you through the day
Faces come and go
No kind word left to show
This fading memory
Of what I used to be.

At last one takes the time to stop by
A kind light in her eye
She stays long enough to say hello
Asking how I want my day to go
To clear my stuff away
Remnants from the history of my stay
This fading memory
Of what I used to be.

As each light fades again
The distant voices and shadows bend
Confusion over people I have known
Great times I lived through now sown
The loneliness persists
My visitors, a really short list
This fading memory
Of what I used to be.

All I ask for each day
Is a little kindness thrown my way
Trapped in my confused state
Praying you won’t change me late
Waiting for you to spend
A moment to clean my folds and bends
This fading memory
Of what I used to be.
