Trout

Behind
my old cabin
stands an old pond
stocked by some benefactor
with a fine family of rainbows
By lease their feeding falls to me
Evenings brings me pond`side
to scatter their floating food
They rise to the feast
roiling the water
with greed

Once
with line & lure
I tested their appetite
thinking not of supper
but simply of good sport
Five casts brought five fish
one of at least two spans
Gently released each
slithered away like
sleek silver slivers
seeking peace
