Solent

by Jem Croucher

Wightlink ferries come and go
From the isle across the water
As back to Portsmouth once again
We take our youngest daughter

The Solent grey and slate-like
Reflects the new year sky
As catamarans and fishing boats
With the ferries hurry by

Across the way in Southsea
At the ‘Jolly Sailor’ just in view
Two good friends with their daughter sat
(Shame none of us knew)

We’ll have to sort that out next time
When we come back again this way
A reunion at Gunwharf Quays
At graduation time in May
