Midwinter dawn

by Jem Croucher

DSCN8649

Down at the beach this morning
I could barely see the sea
Such was the darkness all around
All overpowering me

But then, like magic in the east
A golden band appeared
A sign that dawn was on the way
Dispelling nighttime fears

I watched it grow for quite a while
Darkness lightening all the time
‘Neath morning mist on flat calm sea
And that far horizon line

No warmth with daylight came of course
At this midwinter time of year
But the sight of dawn-break ‘cross the sea
Never fails to bring me cheer
